Volunteer

 

Join our mission to inspire wildlife conservation and provide top-quality care for our animals! We’re looking for dedicated volunteers to support a variety of essential tasks that keep our zoo running smoothly and our animals happy and healthy.

Volunteer Responsibilities May Include:

  • Assisting with animal enclosure and property maintenance
  • Supporting animal hygiene and care routines
  • Helping create and implement animal enrichment activities
  • Contributing to habitat design and improvement
  • Providing friendly customer service and educational support to visitors


 

Requirements:

  • Volunteers must be 16 years or older
  • Individuals 15 and under must be accompanied by an adult at all times
  • Must have reliable transportation 
  • Volunteer shifts require a minimum commitment of 2 hours, 2 times a month. 
  • Friendly, professional, and comfortable speaking with the public
  • Reliable and able to represent the organization positively 
  • Ability to follow fundraising procedures and cash-handling guidelines (if applicable)
  • Able to stand for extended periods and assist with light lifting
  • Willingness to work indoors or outdoors in varying weather conditions

Animal Care & Guest Engagement team member

Animal Care & Guest Engagement team members play a vital role in the daily operations of the zoo. This position supports animal welfare, habitat cleanliness, property upkeep, and positive visitor experiences. Volunteers in this role work closely with animal care staff to ensure animals receive high-quality care while helping guests learn about wildlife and conservation.

This is a hands-on, active role ideal for individuals who enjoy working outdoors, caring for animals, and engaging with the public.

This is a volunteer position at this time. 

Habitat production team member

The habitat production team is a hands-on position involved in habitat fabrication projects and improvements.  The individual must be well versed in state-of-the-art habitat design and production materials and methods to produce high quality habitat simulations that are aesthetically pleasing, functional, durable, and non-toxic to animals in collection. The individual must utilize leadership, communication, organization and creativity. 

This is a selective volunteer position. Because outreach volunteers represent the organization in public and assist with fundraising, not every individual who applies or expresses interest is guaranteed placement in this role. Selection is based on organizational needs, availability, training completion, and alignment with our mission and standards.

This is a volunteer position at this time. 

Enrichment program team member

The enrichment team is a remote and hands-on position involved in enrichment fabrication projects and research. The individual must be well versed the 5 types of animal enrichment, design and production materials and methods to produce high quality simulations that are aesthetically pleasing, functional, durable, and non-toxic to animals in the collection. Enrichments will be made and delivered to the organization or ideas of enrichment will be submitted.  Implantation, oversight and record keeping of activity is responsibility of enrichment program team. The individual must utilize leadership, communication, organization and creativity.

Scientific studies team member

The scientific studies team is a remote position involved in providing scientific and technical assistance in the management of the animal collection and assists in conducting various research or field conservation projects. The individual must utilize leadership, independence, communication, organization and conservation knowledge. 

This is a selective volunteer position. Because outreach volunteers represent the organization in public and assist with fundraising, not every individual who applies or expresses interest is guaranteed placement in this role. Selection is based on organizational needs, availability, training completion, and alignment with our mission and standards.

Thid is a volunteer position at this time. 

Community outreach team member

Community Outreach & Fundraising Volunteers serve as ambassadors for Otters & Others Zoo and Conservation at off-site events and community programs. These volunteers help share our mission, support fundraising efforts, and engage the public in meaningful conversations about wildlife, conservation, and education.

This is a selective volunteer position. Because outreach volunteers represent the organization in public and assist with fundraising, not every individual who applies or expresses interest is guaranteed placement in this role. Selection is based on organizational needs, availability, training completion, and alignment with our mission and standards.

This is a volunteer position at this time. 

Disaster Response team member

The disaster response team is a hands-on position involved in planning, organizing, and implementing emergency preparedness for the organization. Conducting emergency drills and evaluating improvement are crucial. The individual must utilize leadership, communication, and organization. 

This is a selective volunteer position. Because outreach volunteers represent the organization in public and assist with fundraising, not every individual who applies or expresses interest is guaranteed placement in this role. Selection is based on organizational needs, availability, training completion, and alignment with our mission and standards.

This is a volunteer position at this time. 

 

Training & Supervision

  • Orientation and event-specific training provided 
  • Volunteers will receive talking points, fundraising guidelines, and expectations prior to events 
  • All outreach activities are supervised by Otters & Others Zoo and Conservation staff
     

What Volunteers Gain

  • Volunteers pick their own schedule

 

Important Notes

  • This is a volunteer (unpaid) position. When our organization does hire we do look at our volunteer team first before opening the position to external applicants. 
  • Volunteers do not handle animals unless specifically trained and approved. 
  • Volunteers do not handle tools unless specifically trained and approved. 
  • Duties may vary depending on the event, location, and program needs
  • We do have a 3-strike policy.
